Week 6 question exercise

Personal comment about the advantages and risks involved in social graph technologies

The foaf-a-matic web site you visited in exercise 6.3a suggests that you can post the foaf.rdf code generated onto your website somewhere where it is publically accessible. It says that if you do, then programs that utilise the foaf RDF may readily access it. As a post to your blog, labeled ‘Week 6 Social Graph’ discuss why you might or why you might not make such a foaf file available to the world at large?

The Friend of a Friend (FOAF) project is about creating a Web of machine-readable homepages describing people, the links between them and the things they create and do.

Fitzpatrick defines "social graph" as "the global mapping of everybody and how they're related". He went on to outline the problems with it, as well as a broad set of goals going forward.

For me, I might not want to make such a foaf file available to the world at large. One problem is that currently we need to have different log ins for different social networks. Another issue is portability and ownership of an individual's information, explicitly and implicitly revealed while using social networks. As was recently asserted in the Social Bill Of Rights and as has been advocated for a while by Attention Trust Principles, most of users want to own their personal information - including their chunk of the Social Graph. Therefore, making such a foaf file to the world at large is not a ideal concern.

However, if making a foaf to the world within the standard amount it will be helpful. For example, in some social media site Facebook and Myspace, users can find more mutual friends easily if they have some related information. However users will get annoyed if too many names appear on the their mutual friends list which are actually not really related to whom they really want to meet.

Week 5 question exercise

5.3
Create a simple embedded Google Maps interface for a web page.

Blew is the place where I am living now.

5.4
Google Maps range of APIs

The most unique service that can imagine that could be provided linking maps to other
programs or data is Google Earth.

The Google Earth Plug-in and its JavaScript API let you embed Google Earth, a true 3D digital globe, into your web pages. Using the API you can draw markers and lines, drape images over the terrain, add 3D models, or load KML files, allowing you to build sophisticated 3D map applications. If you have an existing Maps API site, you can 3D-enable your page with as little as one line of code.

Week 4 question exercise

Social media music video project
http://oneframeoffame.com/
Referring to either the above website, or another you know of that employs crowdsourcing, briefly discuss whether or not you think this is innovative in terms of social media, produsage and crowdsourcing. Refer to concepts introduced this week in the lecture and course resources.

By visiting http://oneframeoffame.com/, I think this is innovative in terms of social media, produsage and crowdsourcing.

Crowdsourcing is a distributed problem-solving and production model, problems are broadcast to an unknown group of solvers in the form of an open call for solutions. In this site particularly, it gets people from all over the world's attention and participate in this activity. The music video which consists a number of web users' best shots from their own webcam, will help the owner complete the whole music video. The innovation is that the source video is up on the site, but it links users from different places with different nationalities and ages, the video is updated every hour, there will be more and more users come and join this innovative social media activity.

Week 3 question exercise

Visit the links provided and discuss in your tutorial group or online. Write a review analysing the types of interactivity that the campaign engaged.

This "the best job in the word" has played out quite nicely in social media. After visiting the links and discussing with other students I have concluded some types of interactivity that the campaign involved.

In 2009, Tourism Queensland promoted the Great Barrier Reef as a global tourism destination with a website encouraging people worldwide to apply for The Best Job In The World. They post a one-minute video application on Tourism Queensland’s Web site explaining why you should be doing the activities. People will see how much they will earn ($100K U.S) within only 6 months. For most of people it is the first time they have seen a kind of good job like this, the job vacancy really makes people interested and excited, and also wants to find more good about it. The story broke with a Reuters placement around sunrise in Australia on January 12, 2009. It also shows the island location, the links where people can apply.

The types of Interactivity engaged in here are Stromer- Gallery's interactivity as process and product. First of all, interactivity “between people through mediated channels” can be applied because Over 34,000 applications were received from over 200 countries, and whittled down to 16 finalists. Secondly, interactivity “between people and computers” can be applied because videos are posted so that everyone can see and give feedback. Last but not least, interactivity "between people and people" can be applied because people who knows will tell their friends about it and friends will tell friends too.

Week 2 question exercise

Choose at least two out of the six of the following terms of reference to make further comments about the site you have been reviewing and the services it offers:
• Trustworthiness (of the site)
• Reputation (of members)
• Ownership (of content)
• Moderation
• Management of content
• User interface and customisation.

According to the further investigation about the site, I have found more interesting information about the site.

First of all, Facebook moderation. Facebook now allows Page admins to set up a keyword moderation blocklist and enable a profanity blocklist that filters wall posts and comments by users into the Page wall’s spam tab. Admins can configure the list from the Manage Permissions tab of the Page admin interface.

The addition will reduce the need for automated and human-powered third-party moderation systems, and could therefore slow the growth of the Page management and moderation industries.

Facebook moderation

Secondly, Facebook content management. By experiencing a lot from Facebook I started realized that actually there is no effective content management system for Facebook. While there isn’t exactly a simple way of porting over an application like Drupal, an easy way to use CMS for Facebook would be really useful. After discussing a lot with other facebook users I have realized that community building, just like it was on the open net, is an extremely valuable activity on Facebook.

The last but not the least, the trustworthiness. The trustworthiness of Facebook is not very good. Recently, researchers have discovered that more than half a dozen Facebook applications that had been compromised by malicious hackers, this is a really serious problem. Even though most of the applications are not too big, but users still can easily get affected. A number of researchers are spending long time scouring Facebook applications for security vulnerabilities.

Week 1 question exercise

Choose a social media site that you are a member of and say why you engage with it and what you get out of it. If you are not a member of any site, choose one to observe and answer the same question regarding the activities that you observe – or, you may choose to say why you do not normally engage with social media. You are encouraged to use your answers to exercise 1.3 to frame your response.

I will choose Facebbook again his time. The URL is http://www.facebook.com/

I am a member of this site. The first time I got to know about the site was from one of my friends, Vicky. She told me that it is a very good site to connect old friends and meet new friends. Then I went to the site and started getting to know about it. In Facebook, users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information, and other personal information. Users can also communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages and a chat feature. They can also create and join interest groups and "like pages", some of which are maintained by organizations as a means of advertising.

Facebook log in page

What I really like about this site and want to engage with it is the photo application. where users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, compared with other services such as Photobucket and Flickr, which apply limits to the number of photos that a user is allowed to upload. The more friends I add to my friend list, the more photos I can see from them, and at the same time I can also share my photos with them too. Comments can be made under each photo, users can even tag people inside photos. Photo application is the one I spent the most time on.

What I do not care so much about and get out of it is the chatting application. Compare with other software like Windows Messengers or Yahoo Messengers it lacks of stability and has no expression signs to use in chat window. Due to lagging you will probably still see your friend's name online even they have signed out. Users can not hide themselves and see who is online at the same time, if they want to see who is online, they have to appear online first, so it lacks of privacy.Everytime I see my friends on line I will not even bother to say hello.

To sum up, Facebook is a very good and typical social media site, and it is one of the most popular social media site in the world.
