Week 1 question exercise

Choose a social media site that you are a member of and say why you engage with it and what you get out of it. If you are not a member of any site, choose one to observe and answer the same question regarding the activities that you observe – or, you may choose to say why you do not normally engage with social media. You are encouraged to use your answers to exercise 1.3 to frame your response.

I am a member of this site. The first time I got to know about the site was from one of my friends, Vicky. She told me that it is a very good site to connect old friends and meet new friends. Then I went to the site and started getting to know about it. In Facebook, users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information, and other personal information. Users can also communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages and a chat feature. They can also create and join interest groups and "like pages", some of which are maintained by organizations as a means of advertising.

What I really like about this site and want to engage with it is the photo application. where users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, compared with other services such as Photobucket and Flickr, which apply limits to the number of photos that a user is allowed to upload. The more friends I add to my friend list, the more photos I can see from them, and at the same time I can also share my photos with them too. Comments can be made under each photo, users can even tag people inside photos. Photo application is the one I spent the most time on.

What I do not care so much about and get out of it is the chatting application. Compare with other software like Windows Messengers or Yahoo Messengers it lacks of stability and has no expression signs to use in chat window. Due to lagging you will probably still see your friend's name online even they have signed out. Users can not hide themselves and see who is online at the same time, if they want to see who is online, they have to appear online first, so it lacks of privacy.Everytime I see my friends on line I will not even bother to say hello.

To sum up, Facebook is a very good and typical social media site, and it is one of the most popular social media site in the world.
